An essay on Marxian Economics

An essay on Marxian Economics (1942) [1]This essay is an analysis by Joan G. Robinson, a British economist in the middle of 20th century. Her essay deals with the orthodox teachings of capital accumulation, the essential demand crisis and real wages by comparing it to Karl Marx’s Das Kapital. This essay is both a broad critique of Marx and Orthodox Economics. It also advocates for an economic long-term view, which builds upon the Marxian exploitative nature Capitalism.

The History [ edit ]

Robinson wrote this book at a time when academic economics began to reexamine questions about macroeconomics, long-term systems of capitalism and macroeconomics. Alfred Marshall, an English economist who wrote the famous textbook on economics, had focused on ideas such as cost production and supply and demand. He also highlighted the marginal utility and money. Principles of Economics. This led to a widespread mathematical modeling of economics in British universities, which transformed the discipline over the years.[1]

Robinson used John Maynard Keynes’ ideas and Keynesian economics, a branch of economics that focuses on average inflation, aggregate government spending and taxation in this context.[2]. Robinson herself considered Keynes’ The General TheoryToo narrow in its focus[3]She attempted to synthesize her dynamic economic analysis through a post Keynesian lens in the essay.

An essay on Marxian EconomicsEric Roll, the economist, wrote a glowing review. The Yale Law Journal. Roll considered the book significant. Roll maintained its importance alongside Paul Sweezy, a Marxian economist. Theory of Capitalist Development(1942) was “a major landmark in the evolution of economic thinking.” [2]Sweezy described this book as “very interesting” and the first major British economist that showed interest in Marx. [3]David McLellan (political scientist) described the book to be “an impressive attempt at revitalising Marx’s key economic doctrines.” [4]

Ernest Mandel, a Marxian economist, accused Robinson of making misinterpretations about Marx that were similar to Rosa Luxemburg’s. Robinson rejected his view that Marx’s first and third volumes were identical. Das KapitalMake contradictory assumptions regarding real wages. Robinson did not grasp that the third and first volumes were at different levels, that they dealt with different questions, that they made different assumptions, in order to determine the dynamics that would allow them to answer these specific questions. The Value of Crisis: Essays about Marxian Economics in Japan

Japan has had a distinguished and long history of Marxian economic thinking since World War I. The 1920s saw the focus shift to two main areas: Marxian economic thought as it was presented in three volumes of Marx Capital and Japanese capitalism’s specific characteristics after the Meiji Restoration. In a period when Marxism in the United States was not nearly as popular, brilliant debates were held by rival thought schools. Major Japanese universities’ economics departments have offered both neoclassical and Marxist courses since World War II. Many of the best writings by U.S. or European Marxists has been widely translated into Japanese and is still in use. However, there hasn’t been an equivalent exposure to the rich Japanese Marxist tradition. The book by Professor Itoh is an important step in rectifying the lopsided position. The book opens with an informative and long essay about the Japanese development of Marxian economics. It also contains many of Professor Itoh’s original and important contributions to the stream of thought.
